Power to the Early Childhood Professionals

Here we are. It's June, 2020. As our nation faces trying and difficult times, I hear everyone talking about our hometown heroes that are working tirelessly throughout this crisis, the healthcare workers out there on the front lines. Believe me, these people deserve praise. They are risking their own health to take care of our families when we cannot be there. Did you ever wonder who is taking care of their families while they take care of ours? The answer of course, is the unsung heroes of the world, childcare providers.

Even during the best of times, childcare providers are some of the most magical beings in the universe. They are the champions of multitasking (Trust me, if you have never seen a caregiver carry on a conversation with a parent, while consoling a crying child, in the middle of serving the rest of the class lunch, you are seriously missing out). They are the masters of patience. They are the epitome of loving kindness. Seriously, they are the best. And during this time of unrest and a global pandemic they are putting their super powers to the test.

I don't know if you've ever been around a child. If you haven't, let me share some interesting facts about them: They don't practice social distancing. To them, this is not even a thing. Most children would literally stick a Lego in your cornea to help you see it better. Covering coughs and washing hands? There is a learning curve. But even though the risk is there, providers are showing up every day to care for children. They are overcoming group size barriers and adding extra sanitizing measures to their already rigorous cleaning schedule. They are worrying about their own health and the possibility of bringing germs home to their own families. All the while, they are still giving hugs, fixing boo boos, writing lesson plans, reading books, scaffolding learning, and providing support to parents that also need to work to keep us safe and healthy. Best of all? They are doing it all with a smile on their face.

I guess this was just a long way of asking, have you thanked a child care provider today?
